I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard: ‘I don’t really get Twitter’. For some reason it’s always Twitter – never Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram. It’s made me think about how Twitter is a bit like marmite.

Now I don’t like marmite (but I like Twiglets – go figure) but I do like Twitter. I ‘get it’. I also get why people don’t. The character limit is a bit annoying and news feeds can get so crowded it’s difficult to see the wood for the trees sometimes.

But, from a PR perspective, Twitter is fantastic, and I’ll tell you why.

Journalists

Twitter is a brilliant way to get to know the journalists that are writing about your sector. Many journalists use Twitter to put out requests for spokespeople, case studies and content and if you respond quickly, you can secure some lovely press coverage.

Even if they aren’t requesting information, their Twitter profiles are a great way to find out what they like writing about and, if you’re savvy about it, you can tweet them to find out the best way of contacting them.

Networking

Believe it or not, PR isn’t just about getting press coverage. An important part of PR is being well connected; knowing key influencers in your industry and how to interact with them. Twitter is brilliant for this. Simply search relevant hashtags and you’ll quickly be able to build up a picture of relevant organisations and individuals who you should get to know. Like journalists, Twitter also gives you an easy way of getting in touch with them.

Competitor intelligence

Want to know what your competitors are doing? Of course you do. Do you want to follow them and boost their social media reach? Maybe not. In that case, Lists is your best friend. You can add a Twitter account to a list, which you can then browse, without following the account. Job done!

Of course there are loads more benefits of being on Twitter, and other social media platforms as well.
